Scope of the Programme
The ARETÉ Leadership & Life Skills Programme is available to university students who want to be influential and successful, now and in the future. Students are given the tools to move through academic and professional spheres with ease and confidence. On the personal level, through self-knowledge, they learn to embrace positive attitudes, to motivate themselves and others, to set goals and achieve them, to think critically and solve problems, to effectively manage their emotions… Interpersonal effectiveness comes from developing poise, style and excellent language, presentation and social skills. On the academic and professional level, having good study skills, knowing how to manage time and stress, handling interviews well, doing effective presentations are all important programme content that students will value now and in the future when attending university or entering the working world. During the entire programme, the instructor is available to help each student achieve his or her personal goals. Once the programme is completed, students will have the opportunity, if they wish, to put the qualities and skills acquired into practice by doing an internship at an organization of their choice. This will give them the chance to build effective professional networks.

The Leadership & Life Skills programme first looks at developing self-awareness which is the key to understanding the need to develop leadership attitudes, character attributes and skills. The programme then proceeds to work on acquiring these attitudes, qualities and skills. This holistic approach shapes each person to be solid from the inside out. The programme is divided into twelve modules. Modules can be divided up into one or more sessions. Ideally, the programme lasts six months. During the entire programme, the instructor is available to help each student achieve his or her personal goals.
Module 1: Setting the context
Who is a leader and how is a leader formed? Understanding the nature of the human person. The importance of self-awareness. What is personality, temperament and character? Do a temperament test.
Module 2: The character attributes of leaders – Sound Judgement
Developing good judgement. Knowing the best thing to do in every situation. The three steps of decisionmaking: deliberating, judging and deciding. Effective decision-making. Setting goals. Problem-solving skills.
Module 3: The character attributes of leaders – Responsibility
Fulfilling duties towards self and others. Striving for the common good. Working well with others, especially in teams. The different areas of responsibility where one can have an impact on the world.
Module 4: The character attributes of leaders – Courage
The two aspects of courage. Facing fears and overcoming them. Persistence. Patience. Perseverance. Building endurance. Achieving happiness.
Module 5: The character attributes of leaders – Self-Mastery
The different areas where one needs to master oneself. Building self-confidence. Understanding feelings. Freedom and how to direct feelings in order to choose well.
Module 6: Life Skills – Study, Time & Stress Management
Developing a personal approach to studying and learning. Applying time management techniques: the importance/urgency matrix, planning and organizing, overcoming procrastination, etc. Effectively coping, managing and finding ways to reduce unnecessary or unhealthy levels of stress.
Module 7: Life Skills – Managing your Emotions
Recognising emotions. Understanding the role and importance of emotions. Learning to master emotions and using them to one’s advantage.
Module 8: Life Skills – Building Strong Relationships
Together everyone achieves more. Bringing the best out of self and others. Essential skills for teamwork: listening, questioning, persuading, respecting, helping, sharing, participating.
Module 9: Life Skills – Interview Skills
Preparing for university and job interviews. Making a good first impression. Showing self-confidence. Practicing good non-verbal communication. Appropriate attire. Being professional. Asking and answering questions.
Module 10: Life Skills – Presentation Skills I
Part 1 of 2. Adapting to various speaking situations. Knowing the basic skills of doing a good presentation. Content, design and delivery of a presentation.
Module 11: Life Skills – Presentation Skills II
Part 2 of 2. Practice doing a presentation and get feedback.
Module 12: Conclusion
The content of all modules is brought together. Each student does a self-evaluation of progress in acquiring leadership attitudes, qualities and skills during the year and prepares an action plan for the next year.
The content of the programme will be transmitted through activities that make learning during sessions engaging and interactive: group exercises, games, movie clips, case studies, excerpts from well-known literature, etc.
The programme will be conducted in English. Students who may have difficulty with the English language are highly encouraged to apply. The programme will give them the opportunity to be exposed to the English language. They will also be helped to improve their English skills during the course of the programme.
